Travelling Gluten Free
There is no reason why travelling either within Australia or overseas should be off the agenda once you are diagnosed with coeliac disease. With a little research and planning you can enjoy gluten free adventures.
Travelling within Australia
If travelling within Australia, contact the office in your destination state for information regarding:
- Availability of gluten free food within each state
- Location of gluten free retailers within each state
- Lists of restaurants and cafés recommended by members
Travelling overseas
If travelling overseas, members can contact their state Coeliac office for information:
- General travelling advice
- Translations of Coeliac Australia’s restaurant card are available in over 35 different languages
- Travel sheets with information about different countries including contact details for overseas Coeliac organisations where available.
The Travel Talk section of The Australian Coeliac magazine will also provide you with helpful tips and wonderful travel stories. The Australian Coeliac magazine is available with membership.
Travel Insurance
If applying for travel insurance, you will need to disclose coeliac disease as a pre-existing condition. This should not affect the availability of cover from recognised insurers. Some insurers add a surcharge if you want to be covered for any illness relating to coeliac disease while travelling. Insurers that we know provide travel insurance with no surcharge to current Coeliac Australia members include
